When I enrolled for TH101, The Catholic Institute’s (TCI) paper on Introduction to Catholicism, I thought two things: it will be a breeze, and surely I will know most of the material and topics!
As I have been an active, dedicated Catholic all of my life, I have engaged in many activities and roles within the church: Acting DRS; Principal of two Catholic schools; member of the Spiritual Ministries Commission; Spiritual Ministries Director of Hamilton Diocese; Spiritual Director; Retreat Director… I mean, what else could I learn? So it was a shock and a delightful surprise that there was so much more to learn, and comprehend. Among other topics, we have studied - grace and sin; death and afterlife; some sections of encyclicals that inform our social justice teachings and actions, and we have also creatively explored my favourite mystery – The Trinity, and had solid theological teaching on this complicated truth-not-yet-known. There is so much to know and learn about our faith and church, so I would highly recommend TCI study to anyone of any age. The support we all get from our tutors is excellent, so there’s no need to fear that one might become lost or overwhelmed by the subject or the requirements. And the fees are so reasonable.
